Springfield ZIP Directory Coverage
An Illinois Commerce Commission table from 2011 supplies the broad official Springfield list. It is a dated cross-check, not a current street map. The rows below separate well-documented routing groups from codes whose present delivery type was not captured. Verify every code with USPS before using it in a ZIP code directory search.
| ZIP | Area Evidence | Post Office Routing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 62701 | Central Springfield label | 62701 group | Grouped with 62705 |
| 62702 | Springfield | 62702 group | Grouped with 62703 |
| 62703 | Springfield | 62702 group | Separate ZIP area |
| 62704 | Springfield | 62704 group | Groups 62707, 62711, 62712 |
| 62707 | Springfield | 62704 group | Current route check needed |
| 62711 | Springfield | 62704 group | Exact street boundary unavailable |
| 62712 | Springfield | 62704 group | Parcel-city mismatch possible |
| 62708 | Springfield | 62708 group | Grouped with 62794 |
| 62794 | Springfield | 62708 group | Special or agency use possible |
| 62677, 62705, 62706 | ICC Springfield rows | Verify USPS | Delivery type not confirmed |
| 62715 through 62796 | Additional ICC rows | Verify each code | Many may be special-use routes |
The remaining ICC rows include 62715, 62716, 62719, 62721, 62722, 62723, 62726, 62736, 62739, 62756, 62757, 62761 through 62767, 62769, 62776, 62777, 62781, 62786, 62791, and 62796. The research did not establish current residential delivery for each, so the table does not assign neighborhoods or branch names.
Verify Springfield ZIP Codes
The USPS ZIP Code Lookup is the current source for a city-and-state query and recommended mailing-city names. Search Springfield, Illinois, then check the precise street address when available. Save the lookup date because delivery assignments can change.
The official lookup screen illustrates the live verification step.

The result is postal evidence. It does not prove that an address is inside Springfield's municipal boundary or that every person with that mailing label lives in the city.
Springfield Postal Routing Groups
The archived Domestic Mail Manual grouping connects several codes to common Springfield post-office lines. Codes 62701 and 62705 route under 62701. Codes 62702 and 62703 group under 62702. Codes 62704, 62707, 62711, and 62712 group under 62704. Codes 62708 and 62794 group under 62708.
A shared routing line does not merge the ZIP areas. It explains why a post-office line can look different from a parcel's city label. This is a useful geography detail, especially at the city edge or for a special-use code.
Key distinction. A Springfield mailing ZIP is not a current household roster, city boundary, voting precinct, or neighborhood association.
Find Springfield Residents by ZIP
Official systems use ZIP in different ways. USPS verifies delivery labels. Illinois I-CASH accepts city and ZIP for state-held unclaimed-property leads. The voter lookup requires a five-digit ZIP before it loads street choices for a private registration match. Sangamon's assessor has no ZIP field, so it cannot produce a ZIP-wide owner list.
- Verify the address and preferred city name with USPS.
- Use a ZIP-capable record only for its stated purpose, such as I-CASH or one's own voter-registration match.
- For property, switch from ZIP to street, owner, or parcel in the county tax search and GIS.
- Compare the returned address date and type. A mailing address and parcel location can differ.
- Move to the Springfield street directory once the ZIP has narrowed the area.
This ZIP code directory workflow avoids promising a county resident export that the official portal does not offer.
Springfield ZIP Search Fields
The Illinois voter-registration tool uses ZIP as part of an identity match, not as a browse function. A valid five-digit code must be entered before Street Name options appear. The form was not tested with a private person's data.
| Field | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Name | Text | Yes | Name as registered |
| Last Name | Text | Yes | Name as registered |
| Birth Date | Date text | Yes | MM-DD-YYYY example |
| Five Digit Zipcode | Five-digit text | Yes | Loads street controls |
| Street Number | Text | Yes | Address match |
| Street Name | Select | Yes | Populated after ZIP |
By contrast, I-CASH supports Last or Business Name, First Name, City, Zip Code, and Property ID. It is a free unclaimed-property lead, not proof of current Springfield residence.
Springfield ZCTA Maps Are Statistical
The Census Gazetteer files provide 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, known as ZCTAs. Census creates these areas for statistics. They approximate common postal geography but are not USPS routes.
The captured Census reference page shows the correct place to obtain those geography files.

Use a ZCTA for population or map context and label it by vintage. Use USPS for current delivery, and use Sangamon GIS for the parcel itself. Mixing these layers can put an address in the wrong search area.
Springfield ZIPs and City Limits
A mailing-city label can extend beyond a legal city line. The owner's mailing address can also differ from the parcel's situs address, which means the place where the property sits. Springfield neighborhood-association polygons do not follow ZIP boundaries. One ZIP may contain several associations, and one association may cross postal routes.
At the edge of Springfield, use the assessor's city value, parcel record, and GIS geometry to test city or county location. For an exact mismatch, the City Clerk's street-name and annexation files, Sangamon GIS, USPS, and local maps are better than guessing from a code. Research did not locate authoritative street-by-street boundaries for every ZIP.
Note: Never assign a neighborhood to a ZIP without a current official boundary source or an address-level check.
Springfield ZIP Directory Terms
Postal terms can look alike while describing different layers. Defining them keeps a Springfield ZIP code directory from overstating what a search result proves.
- ZIP code
- A USPS delivery code. It is not a city-limit polygon.
- ZIP+4
- A base ZIP plus four digits that narrow a delivery segment.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code used for post-office boxes rather than a normal street delivery area.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to one large organization or institution.
- Carrier route
- The ordered set of addresses served by one postal carrier.
- ZCTA
- A Census statistical area based on common ZIP patterns.
Official records can display a ZIP without offering it as a search field. Sangamon property results may show one even though the search form accepts parcel, owner, house number, direction, street, and city instead.
Springfield Addresses Before ZIP Codes
Older Springfield directories and deeds may use cross-streets, side-of-street notes, legal descriptions, or street names and numbers that later changed. Applying a modern ZIP to those entries can create a false match. Start with the printed wording and its date.
Lincoln Library's Sangamon Valley Collection holds city and county directories, maps, newspapers, and other local sources. Sangamon Recorder instruments use legal descriptions and party indexes. City Clerk files include street-name and annexation material. Together, those sources can place a historical address without forcing it into today's postal scheme.
This is also why the dated ICC list belongs in the Springfield ZIP code directory as evidence with a date, not as a timeless promise. USPS current verification and the source's own vintage should always travel with the result.
Springfield ZIP Research Fallbacks
When a ZIP-wide search fails, move to the geography that the keeper actually uses. County property systems favor parcel, owner, street, and city. Voter tools use ZIP only for an individual match. Historical sources may predate postal codes altogether.
At the county counter, bring the full address, owner name if known, and parcel number if one has been found. For a postal issue, bring the exact address rather than asking for all homes in a ZIP. At Lincoln Library, give an approximate year because directories and newspapers are arranged by publication date. Those details help staff route a narrow question without assuming postal geography is their index.
- USPS city/state and address lookup for current delivery naming
- Sangamon tax search and GIS for parcel location
- I-CASH for a ZIP-filtered state property lead
- Illinois voter lookup for one's own registration match
- County Clerk request route for permitted voter products
- Lincoln Library directories and newspapers for older addresses
A requested voter list is governed by political-use rules and is not a general Springfield residents directory. For a parcel mismatch, use the counter, phone, or written office request if the web view cannot resolve it. Every fallback should preserve the source, access date, and purpose.
